Saffron Fields Vineyard - Premium Pinot Noir
Yamhill-Carlton District AVA
18740 NE Laughlin Road
Yamhill, OR 97148
The color saffron means many things it recalls the fall colors of the grape vines after harvest, in Indian philosophy, saffron is a sacred color, signifying sacrifice and a commitment to the pursuit of perfection. This is the same level of commitment that we hope to bring to the vineyard.
The site is located in Oregon's northern Willamette Valley on a south facing hiltop in Yamhill County, 2 miles east of Yamhill. The vineyard is in the Yamhill-Carlton District AVA. The Yamhill Carlton District AVA, as described in the original petition is a “south-facing bowl containing a series of horseshow-shaped eroded hills” located in the Northern Willamette Valley. This sub-appellation of the broader Willamette Valley AVA surrounds the towns of Yamhill and Carlton and straddles the Yamhill and Washington County borders. As with any good appellation, the soil here is a crucial factor in the style of wines made in the region. The AVA’s ancient sedimentary rock imparts aromas and flavors such as coffee, cocoa, anis, cedar and tobacco into the wines made from grapes grown in the region. Only those vineyards falling within 200 and 1000 ft elevations are permitted to use the AVA designation. This trend amongst the new Willamette Valley sub-appellations, such as the Yamhill Carlton District, only reaffirms Oregon as the leader of ‘terroir’ consciousness in North America.
The climate is a mix of both marine and continental influences; creating an environment that offers mild, wet winters and warm, very dry summers. The site consists of a hillside that starts from 450 ft descending to 250 ft by Laughlin rd. The "saddle" on the top of the hill is about 600 ft wide and is a well drained, warm location suitable for premium grapes. The vineyard will share fences with Lenne Estate to the due north and the Deux Vert vineyard to the south. Willakenzie Estate Winery is located about a qtr mile north across Laughlin rd.
The entire property area is approximately 89 acres with about half of the acreage being suitable for vineyard development. The first 10 acres will be planted with the Pommard clone on a 7' x 4' spacing during the spring of 2007. Plans are to dry farm the entire property. The vineyard development is being managed by Results Partners, LLC.
The Yamhill-Carlton District AVA is producing very special wines and this site has the potential to live up to the high standards set by our distinguished neighbors in this AVA.
We will be maintaining a diary of the vineyard development progress as this very exciting venture moves forward.
